If I was going to open a family
child care in my own I would set up an area and make sure I had areas suitable
for younger children, an area for infants, and finally a pre-school that would
be similar to what you would see in a school system. In order to make the
families feel welcome and make sure their needs are being met I think providing
pictures of the families is a great thing to have. I also think lots of posters
and visuals about diversity would be a great thing to have. I would make sure
to have dolls and other toys that provide a wide range of diversity
(Derman-Sparks, 2010). I would also make
sure to talk with the parents about the holidays they celebrate and make sure
to have activities within my setting for all of the holidays that the children
celebrate. Finally the most important way to make my families feel comfortable
is to collaborate with them as much as possible and make sure I am showing
their family traditions and making sure their culture is represented within my
classroom.
